Marie Knight

She's Got It!

by Chris Heim

Some people just seem to have it: a certain presence or charisma. Marie Knight apparently is one of those charmed few.

"Marie is just captivating," said producer and guitarist Larry Campbell, who worked with Knight on her new album, Let Us Get Together. "She opens her mouth and you want to hear what she has to say."

Author Gayle Wald, who talked with Knight extensively for her recent book, Shout, Sister Shout! The Untold Story of Rock-And-Roll Trailblazer Sister Rosetta Tharpe, remarked, "Marie strikes me as an incredibly strong person. She has been through quite a lot in her life, and she manages to stay positive and energetic. She seems to enjoy taking care of others. When I visited with her, she often got phone calls from church members at Gates of Prayer, her church, who sought her counsel. She's a good storyteller, sometimes of tall tales. And she's charismatic. The dynamism she brings to the stage -- and, no doubt, to her church -- is there in person. She looks at you and you can feel the force of her presence."
