| When the two lovely young women with angelic faces stand onstage, armed with only an
acoustic guitar and a ukulele, the guard comes down. Folk Uke uses that moment to slip
in paradox, irony, and a tongue-in-cheek huge enough to choke the biggest-mouthed
critic and the most naïve listener. Even profanity is used to make the points, hence the
Parental Advisory warning on the innocuous recycled paper cover of its 2005 debut
album.
"Of course we don't want kids to buy it, but in a lot of circles that's a badge of honor!" declared Cathy Guthrie, the ukulele player. She recounted how at one concert, a bunch of bikers began drifting away. "They were like, 'Oh, girls with guitars.' And then we started singing 'Motherfucker [Got Fucked Up],' and all of a sudden the crowd started coming in. They just wanted to hear girls swearing!" The song became a frequent play on Sirius Radio's Red Peters Comedy Music Hour Radio Show. |
