Zombie cat and the editor

From the Editor

We are proud that Dirty Linen is celebrating 26 years in 2009. Our constant theme has been a desire to share exciting musical discoveries with whomever desires to read about them. Evolving from a hobby to a business hasn't been easy, and the current double whammy of a bad economy and reduced interest in print publications is threatening the very survival of niche music print magazines. The past year has seen several eclectic music magazines print their last issues, among them No Depression, Harp, and, recently, Performing Songwriter.

How can you help? Paste magazine has been asking for donations in order to keep publishing. While we certainly wouldn't turn down any much-appreciated monetary gifts, there are other ways you can support Dirty Linen and get something more for your dollars.

1) Our reader surveys have shown that several people read each copy of Dirty Linen. Purchase a gift subscription for those who borrow your copy, or convince them to subscribe. Otherwise, besides not having magazines delivered to their door before they show up in stores, your friends are missing out on three free "Editor's Choice" sampler CDs each year.

2) If you purchase the magazine from a newsstand, please purchase a subscription. You would not miss an issue, and you would also receive the sampler CDs. Dirty Linen receives more revenue from a subscription than from equivalent newsstand sales.

3) Purchase a T-shirt or other merchandise from our website. The shirts are customizable -- pick your style and color. Then wear your clean linen proudly.

4) Purchase items from amazon.com and cdbaby.com via the links on our website. Dirty Linen receives small referral fees for all purchases made via visits from our website, whether you buy a toothpick or an aircraft carrier, and your cost does not increase.

5) Buy back issues. The music we cover does not have a "sell by" date. Search or browse the back issues page of our website to find out if we've covered your favorite artists in the past.

6) Purchase one or more ads. There is a shrinking pool of print magazines to advertise in. Whether you have CDs or festival tickets to sell, a roster of artists who need gigs, or musical instruments or equipment that needs buyers, you can reach Dirty Linen readers -- people who are passionate about music. Advertising information is on our website, or contact our office for more information: 1-800-276-5441 or 1-304-782-3024. And when you make purchases from our advertisers, tell them you are a Dirty Linen reader.

We want to go for another 26 years. The world keeps getting smaller, and there's so much great music to share. Want to come along for the ride?
